International Year of Millets was celebrated at the College of Agriculture, Bharuch in collaboration with Hill Millets Research Station, Waghai on February 20, 2023, to create awareness about millets among students, farmers and other stockholders. The programme was inaugurated and chaired by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Dr. Z. P. Patel along with the courteous presence of Dr. J. G. Patel, Member, Academic Council; Dr. V. R. Naik, ADR; Dr. D. D. Patel; Principal; Dr. H. E. Patil, Associate Research Scientist; HMRS; Head of KVK’s and Research Units, farmers, students and faculties of Bharuch campus.
Hon’ble VC sir highlighted the significance of the International Millets Awareness Celebration and shared his ideas to increase the consumption of millets in daily life for nutritional security. The poem shared by Hon’ble VC emphasized the role of millets in food and nutritional securities with his wise and influencing words that certainly motivated the gathering. Finally, he appealed to increase the consumption of millets along with routine food.
Lectures were delivered on various aspects of millets by Dr. H. E. Patil (Varietal description and significance of millets), Dr. Tushar Patel, Asstt. Professor (Production technology on millets) and Dr. S. L. Sanghani (Value addition in millets) during the technical session. More than 150 people (farmers, students and scientists) participated in this farmer’s day cum awareness programme on millets. The book on Package of Practices of Hill Millets and Practical manuals on Mushroom was released by Hon’ble VC. The seeds of nutricereals (Nagali and Ragi) and Vermicompost were distributed to all the farmers with technical booklets and folders. The Millet calendar was also unfolded during the inaugural programme for the benefit of farmers. A special poster competition session was organized on 17th February, 2023 on various aspects of millets to encourage the students to participate. Besides, students also performed a small drama on the significance and importance of millets with the purpose to create awareness among the gathering. An exhibition on millets and its value-added products was arranged at CoA, Bharuch. The programme was anchored by Dr. H. H. Patel, Assistant Professor (Agronomy). Programme ended with a vote of thanks offered by Dr. Jaimin Pandya, Asstt. Professor.
