“Amalsad Chikoo” gets first GI tag in South Gujarat
In a momentous achievement for Gujarat’s horticultural sector, the renowned “Amalsad Chikoo” has been awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Amalsad chikoo has got 'GI' to the first ever agriculture commodity in South Gujarat under able leadership of Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor Dr. Z. P. Patel on March 27, 2025.
Hon'ble VC has elaborated all about the work done at Fruit Research Station, NAU, Gandevi for the development of horticultural activities in South Gujarat since 1935 by all package of practices of the center that has investigated and recommended rayan or khirni as a rootstock for approach or softwood grafting in sapota first time in the world; and the Crop Pest Map & Pest calendar were framed first time as well as Methyl Eugenol fruit fly trap in the country to guide the sapota farmers.
Hon'ble VC has extended special thanks to Samiksha Dabhade, an expert advocate (GI Tag) and researcher for getting GI tag of “Amalsad Chikoo”. He also appreciated the team of NAU namely Dr. T. R. Ahlawat, Director of Research; Dr. V. R. Naik, Associate Director of Research; Dr. Y. N. Tandel, Professor (Fruit Science); Dr. A. R. Kaswala, Professor (Soil Science) and Dr. G. D. Patel, Assistant Professor for the success in getting GI tag.
At the occasion Chairman of Valsad Navsari Fal ane Shakbhaji Sahakari Sangh Ltd., Gandevi highlighted about the association of ten co-operatives societies and different activities of federation like processing of horticultural produce. He told that due to getting GI tag farming community are very happy and eager to export as an Amalsad Chikoo.
On this occasion, Dr. Narottam Sahoo, Advisor and Member Secretary, GUJCOST also expressed happiness with his presence.
