As per the UNO declaration of 21st March as the International Day of Forests every year, College of Forestry, Navsari along with Social Forestry Division, Navsari, celebrated the International Day of Forests-2024 at university level. The event was chaired by Hon’ble Vice- chancellor Dr Z. P. Patel along with Dr. B. G. Vashi, Retd. Professor (Botany), College of Forestry as chief guest; Dr. R. M. Naik, DSW and Shri Anand Kumar S. (DCF, Surat Forest Division Surat) as Guest of honour. Dr M. B. Tandel Dean, Forestry welcomed all the dignitaries and briefed about the programme. Mrs. Bhavnaben Desai (DCF, Social Forest Division, Navsari) highlighted the opportunities and challenges in this sector.
Hon’ble VC emphasized on the importance of traditional knowledge of forest and Medicinal values of the different plants. He also encouraged students to take a big challenge in order to uplift the livelihoods of tribals and poor farmers. To commemorate the vital importance of forests in sustaining our life on earth, students from various disciplines like Forestry, Horticulture and Agriculture were encouraged to take part. A total of 21 teams with 4 members in each team participated in the two-day program which was prorated into several interesting events.
Events like Phyto hunt where teams were asked to solve the clues/ puzzle related to tree identification based on botanical features of tree given to them. In another interesting event “VANMAY” participants were asked to identify flora and fauna mentioned in the instrumental music/karaoke of Indian songs. A quiz competition was also organised where teams were to showcase their basic knowledge based on the questions in major discipline of environment, biodiversity conservation and forestry as a whole. Drawing and poster presentation on the Theme- “Forests and Innovation – New solutions for a better world” was another highlight of the IDF-2024.
The event was concluded by prize distribution and certificates. On the behalf of College of Forestry, SRC chairman Dr Jayesh Pathak, in the end, thanked all the invited guest, organizers and participants for their relentless effort, and collective strength. Major highlight of this event was that FAO (Rome) designated our successful event on their website to showcase affords done by our institution towards the conservation of Mother Nature (https://www.fao.org/international-day-of-forests/events/en/). Through this event College of Forestry seeks to set a reminder of our collective responsibility to conserve our natural biodiversity and make the world a better place for everyone.
