Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Dr. Z. P. Patel inaugurated Gujarat’s first-ever medium-term seed conservation facility, “Seed Bank,” along with a “Seed Storage Godown” at Megaseed (Project), Pulses and Castor Research Station, Navsari Agricultural University (NAU), Navsari on October 9, 2025.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Dr. T. R. Ahlawat, Director of Research; Dr. Hemant Sharma, Director of Extension Education; Dr. H. M. Virdia, Registrar; Prof. Jaimin Naik, Director of Students’ Welfare; Dr. Vipul Shinde, Executive Engineer; Dr. V. R. Naik and Dr. Lalit Mahatma, Associate Directors of Research; Dr. P. B. Patel, Principal and Dean, N. M. College of Agriculture; Dr. Alka Singh, Principal and Dean, ASPEE College of Horticulture; Dr. M. B. Tandel, Principal and Dean, College of Forestry; Dr. J. J. Pastagia, Principal, ASPEE Agribusiness Management Institute; Dr. Kailash D. Tandel, Librarian; and Dr. D. A. Chauhan, Research Scientist (Megaseed), PCRS, along with other faculty and staff members of the Navsari Campus.
These newly established infrastructures will significantly strengthen the ongoing research and development activities of crop scientists at NAU working on diverse crops. The seed conservation facility will also benefit to horticultural crop research and ensure the preservation of precious nucleus seed materials, thereby maintaining the rolling seed chain. Moreover, it will serve as a repository for local landraces, preventing their extinction and contributing substantially to the conservation of crop diversity in South Gujarat.
